About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 26 February 2026

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

Acquired demyelinating disorders, such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder, and Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Associated Disorders, constitute a heterogeneous group in which the visual system is frequently involved. The recent addition of the optic nerve as a fifth topographical location in the proposed MS McDonald diagnostic criteria highlights the importance of the visual pathway in these disorders. Moreover, recent advances in structural and functional visual system assessments have led to exponential growth in knowledge about the visual pathway in demyelinating disorders.

This Research Topic will explore clinical and biological aspects of the visual system in demyelinating conditions. Work within this Research Topic will ultimately improve the diagnosis and treatment of demyelinating conditions. Contributions to this Research Topic should aim to expand our understanding by integrating data on clinical outcomes with cutting-edge research on immunology, neurobiology, epidemiology, and structural and functional visual system metrics.

To gain further insights into the relationships between the visual system and demyelinating diseases, we welcome submissions across a diverse range of manuscript types supported by the journal (including Original Research, Brief Research Reports, Perspectives, Protocols, Mini-Review, Reviews, etc.). These manuscripts should explore, but not be limited to, the following themes:
- Advances in the diagnosis of visual system pathology and/or monitoring of vision in demyelinating disorders.
- Neuroprotective strategies and their effects on the visual system.
- The role of paraclinical tools (e.g. optical coherence tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, visual evoked potentials) in the assessment of demyelinating disorders
- Patient-reported outcomes and associations with structural or functional visual metrics
- Innovations in treatment approaches specifically targeting the visual system in demyelinating diseases.

Articles accepted after peer review will be published and appear online as soon as approved for publication.
