Background

This collection explores cutting-edge research on the immune system's response to mucosal pathogen colonization, a critical area in infectious disease control. Mucosal surfaces are primary entry points for many pathogens, and understanding immune mechanisms at these interfaces is vital. We seek manuscripts that delve into the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity in preventing pathogen colonization. Highlighting recent discoveries in mucosal immunology, we invite studies that elucidate the pathways and cellular mechanisms driving effective immune responses. These contributions will expand our understanding of how the immune system detects and eradicates pathogens at mucosal sites, laying the groundwork for innovative therapeutic strategies.

Central to this collection is the development of new immunogens and adjuvants that enhance mucosal immunity. We are particularly interested in cutting-edge research on novel antigen design and delivery systems tailored for mucosal application. Manuscripts should focus on innovations that improve the efficacy of immune responses. Studies investigating new adjuvant formulations that potentiate mucosal immunogenicity, thereby boosting vaccine effectiveness, are highly encouraged. Contributions detailing preclinical and clinical trials and showcasing breakthroughs in vaccine technology specifically targeting mucosal pathogens are crucial to this collection.

We also encourage submissions that explore interdisciplinary approaches to combating mucosal pathogen colonization. Research highlighting the translational aspects of these strategies—from laboratory to clinic—is of great interest. Overall, this collection aims to present a comprehensive overview of the latest scientific advancements and technological innovations in mucosal immunology, providing a platform for ongoing dialogue and development in this essential field of medical science.

Carlos Guzman is named as inventor in different patents/patent applications for adjuvants, vaccine antigens, prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines, and vaccination/immune intervention strategies. He is also the advisor of InStar Technologies.

Juliana Cassataro is an inventor of 2 granted patents on adjuvants. The owner of these patents is CONICET and UNSAM
