Background

In the realm of public health, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, prompting a critical examination of its myriad influences. Recent scholarly focus has shifted towards the intricate ways in which environmental factors such as air quality, urban greenery, and climate change intersect with individual lifestyle choices and broader socioeconomic conditions to affect heart health. These environmental determinants are especially pertinent as they are modifiable and can significantly impact population health. Studies have increasingly documented how varying levels of exposure to poor environmental conditions can exacerbate CVD risks, particularly among disadvantaged socioeconomic groups, thereby magnifying existing health inequalities.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate the complex interactions between environmental factors and cardiovascular health. Specifically, it seeks to explore how elements such as pollution, access to natural spaces, and environmental stressors influence heart disease when combined with lifestyle behaviors like diet and physical activity, and how these are further mediated by socioeconomic status. The goal is to generate a holistic understanding that could inform targeted interventions and policies to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases across diverse populations.

To gather further insights in these multifaceted interactions, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

Epidemiological evidence linking environmental factors to cardiovascular outcomes

Mechanistic studies on how natural and urban environments impact heart health

The role of socio-economic status in moderating environmental effects on cardiovascular risk

Policy analysis on interventions aimed at mitigating environmental risk factors for heart disease

Comparative studies on the cardiovascular health of populations in different environmental settings

Longitudinal assessments of lifestyle changes as mediating factors between environment and cardiovascular health

Through these themes, the Research Topic will provide a comprehensive view of how environmental and lifestyle factors converge to shape cardiovascular health outcomes, capturing the complexity of these relationships as they evolve in the face of global changes such as urbanization and climate shifts

Keywords: Lifestyle, Socioeconomic Factors, Cardiovascular Disease
