About this Research Topic

Background

Neuro-ophthalmology focuses on diseases that affect the optic nerve and the visual pathways. Due to the complexity of the visual and central nervous systems, accurate and early diagnostics are crucial. Recent advances in imaging technology have greatly enhanced our understanding and capability in diagnosing and potentially treating disorders such as optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, and glaucoma-related visual field defects. However, despite these technological advances, challenges remain in early diagnosis and precise imaging, which could lead to faster and more effective treatments.

This Research Topic aims to address these challenges by consolidating the latest advancements and research in imaging within neuro-ophthalmology. We seek to explore how novel imaging techniques can improve diagnostic accuracy, prognosis, and the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neuro-ophthalmic diseases. By focusing on innovative imaging solutions, this topic intends to bridge the gap between current challenges and future possibilities, paving the way for implementation in clinical practice.

To gather further insights into the field of neuro-ophthalmology imaging, we welcome submissions across a diverse range of manuscript types supported by the journal (including Brief Research Reports, Protocols, Review and Mini-Review, Original Research, etc.). These manuscripts should explore, but not be limited to, the following themes:
- Advances in MRI techniques specific to neuro-ophthalmology
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its evolving role in clinical diagnostics
- OCT angiography to explore the retinal and choroidal microvasculature
- The utility of ultrasound imaging in neuro-ophthalmic settings
- Novel imaging biomarkers predicting disease severity and response to treatment
- Functional neuroimaging studies exploring visual pathway impairment and cortical involvement
- Multimodal imaging integration approaches to improve diagnostic confidence in complex cases
- Imaging studies defining structural and functional correlations in neurodegenerative visual conditions
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in advanced image analysis for neuro-ophthalmology diagnostics

Through this focused exploration, the Research Topic aims to facilitate a deeper understanding and foster innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of neuro-visual conditions.
