Status Epilepticus: Current Concepts and Future Directions

Status epilepticus (SE) is a medical emergency characterized by prolonged or rapidly recurring seizures without recovery between them. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, requiring prompt intervention to prevent long-term neurological damage or death. The term "status epilepticus" broadly includes both convulsive and non-convulsive forms, with convulsive SE being more easily recognized. With its subtle clinical manifestations, non-convulsive SE remains underrecognized and EEG plays a crucial role in the diagnosis.

While the management of status epilepticus has improved significantly, future advances in early detection, personalized therapy, and neuroprotective strategies hold great promise in reducing its morbidity and mortality. As research progresses, more effective and individualized approaches are expected to transform the treatment landscape for patients with SE.

This Research Topic aims to provide a scholarly forum for cutting-edge research and reviews that addresses topics related to status epilepticus ranging from pathophysiology to treatment and future directions. We seek to explore advancements in early detection, tailored treatments, and neuroprotection that could lower the adverse outcomes associated with SE, ultimately improving patient care.
