Background
Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome represents a multifaceted health issue characterized by the intersection of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. The syndrome is underpinned by a range of biological mechanisms including insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, lipotoxicity, impaired energy metabolism, chronic inflammation, and dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Despite longstanding concerns over the cardiovascular implications of diabetes and metabolic syndromes, the specific cardiovascular risks associated with CKM syndrome are not fully understood. This gap in knowledge, combined with the increasing recognition of CKM syndrome, underscores the need for deeper investigation into its cardiovascular components.
This Research Topic aims to elucidate the mechanisms leading to increased cardiovascular risks within the context of CKM syndrome. Specific areas of interest include the effects of hyperglycemia, lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, RAAS dysfunction, vascular endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and kidney impairment. By clarifying these mechanisms, this topic seeks to advance our understanding of cardiovascular pathology in CKM syndrome and identify potential therapeutic targets.
To gather further insights into the complex interplay of cardiovascular risks in CKM syndrome, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: o Epidemiological studies on cardiovascular risks associated with CKM syndrome. o Mechanistic insights into arteriosclerotic cardiovascular diseases in CKM syndrome. o Innovative strategies to improve cardiovascular outcomes in CKM syndrome. o The role of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in CKM-related cardiovascular risk. o Clinical trials evaluating therapeutic interventions targeting specific mechanisms in CKM syndrome. This call for submissions aims to expand the repertoire of knowledge and therapeutic strategies against cardiovascular complications seen in CKM syndrome.
Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
