Background

Metabolomics, the comprehensive study of small-molecule metabolites, has emerged as a powerful tool in biomedical research, offering insights into disease mechanisms, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic monitoring. In recent years, the use of metabolomics for prognostic applications has gained increasing attention, with researchers leveraging metabolic profiling to assess disease severity, monitor progression, and predict recurrence in various pathologies, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

This Research Topic aims to highlight cutting-edge advancements in the application of metabolomics as a prognostic tool, focusing on its ability to differentiate disease stages, predict recurrence, and enhance personalized medicine approaches. Risk stratification models can be refined by integrating metabolomics with other omics technologies, machine learning, and clinical parameters, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

We invite contributions that explore novel metabolomic biomarkers, innovative analytical techniques, and computational models that enhance prognostic accuracy across different disease areas. Studies employing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and other high throughput metabolomic approaches to uncover prognostic signatures are particularly welcome. Submissions shouldn’t focus solely on bioinformatic insights, but should include substantial experimental data that validates findings and provides mechanistic understanding. Furthermore, we encourage submissions that address challenges related to reproducibility, standardization, and clinical translation of metabolomic prognostic markers.
