Background
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, posing a significant burden on people’s health and on healthcare systems. It is a major risk factor for a wide range of cardiometabolic disorders, from type 2 diabetes mellitus to cardiovascular disease.
Adipose tissue hypertrophic expansion and dysfunction, secondary to nutrient and energy overload, is at the forefront in linking obesity with its cardiometabolic comorbidities. In this regard, the dysfunctional adipose tissue secretes a wide array of endocrine mediators, also embedded in extracellular vesicles, which can convey metabolically detrimental effects to other tissues involved in metabolic regulation, including the skeletal muscle and liver.
In light of this, the Research Topic titled “The Role of Adipose Tissue Dysfunction in the Pathogenesis of Obesity Comorbidities” aims to gather novel insights into the relationship between adipose tissue dysfunction and impaired cardiometabolic health, with particular focus on the contribution of the adipose tissue secretome to obesity-related comorbidities.
To support this aim, we welcome submissions exploring, but not limited to, the following themes:
- The impact of adipose tissue dysfunction on adipocyte and the stromal vascular fraction secretome;
- The role of nutrients, nutraceuticals, and dietary patterns as modulators of the adipose tissue secretome;
- The impact of adipose tissue dysfunction in shaping cardiometabolic health via interorgan crosstalk modulation;
- The molecular mechanisms underpinning the effects of nutrients, nutraceuticals, and dietary patterns on adipose tissue dysfunction and the secretion of metabolically detrimental adipokines, and their subsequent impact on cardiometabolic health.
Authors are welcome to submit systematic reviews using publicly available data, provided they adhere to PRISMA guidelines and include a completed checklist upon submission. Meta-analyses must comply with the PRISMA extension guidelines and include the corresponding checklist. All submissions should include a conclusion relevant to the field of endocrinology.
