Background

Neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder is caused by trauma- or non-trauma-induced damage to the C5 nerve root or its branches, resulting in denervation of the muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and deltoid). It is a common shoulder joint disease that seriously affects patients' daily lives and work abilities. The etiology of non-traumatic C5 nerve root lesions causing shoulder abduction disorder is complex, such as neuritis, nerve root diseases, etc. Currently, drug therapy - including vitamin B1, B6, mecobalamin, and coenzyme Q10 - is mainly used. However, the therapeutic effect is limited. For traumatic C5 nerve root injuries, surgical repair is primarily employed at present, such as accessory nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve, triceps branch of the radial nerve transfer to the axillary nerve, or intercostal nerve transfer to the axillary nerve, etc.

This research topic aims to explore the mechanism of occurrence and development of neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder, as well as the latest therapeutic strategies. The goal is to address challenges in mechanisms and clinical therapy, including the development of new medicines and operative procedures. Through this research, we provide insights that can address this dysfunction and ultimately improve the quality of life for individuals affected by neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder.

To gather further insights into the mechanisms and therapy of neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Pathophysiological mechanisms of neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder
- Evaluation and development of new pharmacological treatments
- Implementation and assessment of novel surgical and non-surgical procedures
- Translational research aimed at improving patient outcomes
- Reviews and meta-analyses of existing literature on neurogenic shoulder abduction disorder mechanisms and treatments
