Background

Mycotoxins are chemical toxic compounds produced by filamentous fungi species. These toxins are ubiquitously distributed and present in all animal diets at variable levels and combinations. Most of the animal diets will contain these mycotoxins. Due to their variability in chemical composition and levels of exposure, their mode of action may vary from oxidative stress to carcinogenic activity. Some mycotoxins, like zearalenone (ZEN), are known for their reproductive toxicity due to their oestrogenic activity. However, other mycotoxins not considered as endocrine disruptors may also negatively impact animal reproduction. Additionally, most of the reproductive effects of mycotoxins are detected under acute exposure, and there is a paucity of information regarding chronic exposure.

The present Research Topic is an invitation to gather information regarding the effect of mycotoxins on the reproduction of farm and companion animals. The primary objective is to facilitate the dissemination of studies about the reproductive toxicity of mycotoxins, emphasising their mechanisms of action, principal consequences, and strategies to mitigate their adverse impact.

Key areas of interest include:
-Effects of mycotoxins on the reproductive function of farm and companion animals
-Case Reports
-Clinical Findings
-Studies with cell lines and reproductive cells (oocytes and spermatozoa)
-Interaction of mycotoxins and their impact on animal reproduction
-Interventions to protect the reproductive function of animals exposed to mycotoxins
