Background

The construction and facilities management sector is pivotal in advancing the built environment's objectives in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Particularly relevant to the goals of industry, innovation, and infrastructure, this sector is currently witnessing transformative impacts through the integration of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Recent studies have affirmed the efficiency gains and sustainability benefits of these technologies; however, much remains to be uncovered about their comprehensive potential and limitations. Concurrently, there is a growing emphasis on digitalization alongside adherence to ISO standards as leading practices in facilities management for the future.

This Research Topic aims to bridge existing knowledge gaps by examining how sustainable practices in construction and facilities management can amplify environmental, economic, and social outcomes. It will delve into evaluating smart facility management systems and frameworks, testing hypotheses related to the circular economy and clean energy technologies, and assessing their contribution to advancing sustainability within the built environment. By focusing on such topics, we seek to align these practices with UN SDGs in meaningful ways, further testifying to the essential role that smart technologies and innovation play in this context.

To gather further insights in the realm of sustainable construction and facilities management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Empirical studies on how smart sustainable facility management supports the UN SDGs.
- The role of digitalization and smart technologies in facilities management.
- Theoretical frameworks for integrating UN SDGs in the construction and facilities management field.
- Case studies exploring behavioral, infrastructure, or technical barriers impacting the adoption of smart technologies, such as AI and IoT, in construction and facilities management.
- The economic benefits of smart, sustainable facilities management and the circular economy principles.
- The impact of circular economy principles with clean energy technologies in modular construction on urban resilience post-pandemic.
- Empirical research on how clean energy in modular building systems influences urban sustainability and climate goals in sustainable built environments.
