Background

As global fossil resources dwindle and environmental pressures intensify, using renewable biomass resources for various chemical production processes is essential towards achieving sustainable development.

Biomass, as a renewable and carbon-neutral feedstock, presents a viable and abundant alternative to fossil resources, gaining significant traction within the scientific community. Green chemistry, which advocates for the minimal environmental impact in the production and development of chemicals and fuels, identifies catalysis as a crucial element in achieving its goals. Advanced catalytic methods have demonstrated a strong track record in enabling energy-efficient and selective molecular transformations, which significantly contribute to chemical and industrial product production.

This Research Topic aims to contribute to the advancement of sustainable chemistry by focusing on innovative research in catalytic processes involving biomass-based feedstocks. It seeks to explore the potential of advanced catalysis to facilitate the transformation of biomass into fuels and chemicals in a sustainable manner.
Additionally, the Research Topic will cover electrochemical methods for chemical production and energy-related applications, investigate alternative solvents and solvent-free processes, assess the role of nanoscale materials for sustainable solutions, and introduce new methodologies for comprehensive life-cycle assessment. By fostering such discussions, the aim is to establish a robust platform for researchers, academics, and industry professionals to share their latest findings and innovative approaches in catalysis geared towards sustainability, with a specific focus on biomass-based feedstocks. This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which focuses on responsible consumption and production.

To gather further insights in this interdisciplinary field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Innovative catalytic processes for biomass conversion
- Electrochemistry and energy storage applications
- Development and evaluation of alternative solvents
- Role of nanomaterials in sustainable chemistry
- Life-cycle assessment methodologies in chemical production

For this Research Topic, we invite Mini Reviews, Original Research, Perspectives, and Reviews.
