Background

Organ-on-chips (OoCs) represent a cutting-edge field within bioengineering, offering microengineered platforms that simulate the essential structural, mechanical, and biochemical dynamics of human tissues and organs. These sophisticated systems provide an enhanced alternative to traditional 2D cultures and certain animal models through their precise control over cellular microenvironments and fluidic dynamics. Initially spearheaded in human health research to model diseases, screen drugs, and conduct toxicological assessments, recent breakthroughs have broadened the application of OoCs to veterinary science and comparative biology. This expansion offers promising pathways to explore animal physiology more deeply, understand zoonotic diseases, and tailor species-specific responses to pharmaceuticals, thus enhancing translational relevance in human and animal medicine.

The primary objective of this Research Topic is to compile multidisciplinary research that delves into the development and utilization of OoC systems in both human and animal contexts. Although human OoCs have achieved significant milestones in replicating liver, lung, gut, brain, and other key tissues, there remains an opportunity to increase their complexity by integrating immune components, microbial elements, and inter-organ interactions. Conversely, the application of OoCs in animal research, an area still in its nascent stage, holds exciting prospects for advancing animal health, fostering veterinary therapeutic development, and minimizing reliance on live animal testing. By emphasizing innovative approaches such as fabrication techniques, functional material usage, and use-case studies across diverse species, this Topic seeks to nurture cross-sectoral understanding and drive technological innovation in this vibrant field.

To deepen insights in this rapidly evolving arena, we invite submissions that address the development and application of OoC technologies pertinent to both human and animal health. Potential themes for exploration include, but are not limited to:
