Background

The 14th International Veterinary Immunology Symposium (IVIS2025) was hosted in Vienna, Austria. IVIS2025 covered 14 themes in veterinary immunology including innate and adaptive immunity, animal models, vaccine development, infectious diseases, and the veterinary toolkit. Via selected publications, this research topics reflects on this symposium and highlights research from outstanding participants.

This Research Topic will explore cutting-edge research that advance our understanding of the biological mechanisms driving host-pathogen interactions in animals. Of particular interest is research exploring the molecular and cellular basis of innate and adaptive immunity, with an emphasis on novel diagnostic, vaccine, and therapeutic strategies against infectious and immune-mediated diseases. Emphasizing a One Health perspective, this Topic acknowledges the cross-species dynamics of infectious diseases and the need for integrated control strategies.

The Topic Editors encourage submissions that focus on recent advancements in reagent and methodological development, breakthroughs in disease control, and the application of immunological knowledge to enhance animal health and welfare. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and highlighting collaborative solutions, this Research Topic will push veterinary immunology into a new era of scientific excellence, equity, and global impact - directly aligning with IVIS2025's mission to create a welcoming, inclusive, and transformative scientific community.

Topic Editor Tobias Käser received financial support from Elanco, Capricorn, and Aptimmune. Topic Editor Kerstin Mair received financial support from Merck, Boehringer-Ingelheim, and several partners within an IHI-funded EU project Partners. Topic Editor François Meurens received financial support from Glycovax, and Ceva Biovac. Topic Editor Elisa Crisci provides advisory services to Resilient Biotics and Elanco. The other Topic Editors declare no competing interests with regard to the Research Topic subject.

We acknowledge the initiation and support of this Research Topic by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS).
