Background

In recent years, the integration of technology into livestock farming has opened new frontiers in optimizing animal nutrition. Precision and smart nutrition powered by sensors, automation, and artificial intelligence enable real-time monitoring and dynamic adjustment of feed strategies tailored to individual or group needs. These approaches not only improve feed efficiency and reduce environmental impact, but also enhance animal health, welfare, and the quality of animal-derived products. As global demand for sustainable and high-quality animal production increases, precision livestock nutrition has become a key driver for innovation.

Despite growing interest, there is a need to consolidate research on how technological tools can be effectively implemented across species and production systems. This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary insights into how precision nutrition contributes to healthier animals, improved performance, and higher-quality products, while supporting sustainability goals in modern animal farming.

We encourage submissions that explore innovative strategies such as sensor-based feed intake monitoring, real-time data integration, AI-assisted diet formulation, and smart feeding systems across various livestock species. Studies addressing the environmental sustainability of precision nutrition - such as emissions reduction or waste minimization - are also welcome.

We invite a range of manuscript types, including:

• Original Research Articles presenting novel data or field trials
• Reviews and Mini-Reviews summarizing current advancements and gaps
• Methods Papers introducing new tools or techniques
• Perspectives and Opinions discussing future trends or conceptual frameworks
• Case Studies describing on-farm applications and outcomes

Contributions should offer scientific, technological, or practical insights that advance the implementation of precision nutrition in animal production systems.
