Endocrine diseases are a diverse group of systemic disorders that are characterised by hormonal imbalances, which can have a substantial impact on overall health, including the oral cavity. Hormones play a critical role in maintaining oral tissue homeostasis by influencing various biological processes such as bone remodelling, salivary gland function, immune response, and soft tissue integrity. Consequently, disorders of endocrine function, whether due to diseases such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction, adrenal disorders, or pituitary abnormalities, can manifest as distinct oral features and pathologies.
For example, diabetes mellitus is strongly associated with periodontal disease, delayed wound healing, and increased susceptibility to oral infections, while thyroid disorders may alter bone metabolism and present with changes in tongue appearance or salivary composition. Similarly, conditions such as acromegaly, Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome may exhibit clinically significant oral manifestations. Understanding the bidirectional relationships between endocrine dysfunction and oral disease is essential for developing integrated diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in both dental and medical settings. Despite growing awareness, many of these relationships remain underexplored, and the underlying biological mechanisms are not fully understood.
This Research Topic aims to bring together multidisciplinary studies examining the complex interactions between the endocrine system and oral health.
We encourage contributions that address the following themes: - Pathophysiological mechanisms linking endocrine dysfunction to oral diseases - Clinical features and manifestations of endocrine disorders in the oral cavity - Molecular and cellular pathways involved in oral tissue changes due to hormonal imbalance - Epidemiological patterns and risk factors for oral complications in endocrine disease populations - Strategies for early diagnosis and prevention of oral pathologies associated with endocrine disorders - Interdisciplinary approaches for integrated management of patients with both endocrine and oral disease - Impact of endocrine disorder treatment on oral health and vice versa
