Background

This review series is part of the Core Curriculum Lecture Review Series, a collaborative educational initiative between the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Mayo Clinic. The program was designed to address critical clinical and scientific challenges in the rapidly evolving field of cardio-oncology, with a primary focus on the education of MD fellows, residents, and trainees. Faculty from both institutions worked together to identify high-priority topics and to develop lectures that integrate current research, clinical guidelines, and expert perspectives across the spectrum of cardiovascular complications associated with cancer therapy.

Medical students and trainees at MD Anderson contribute significantly to the development of this series. They attend lectures, transcribe and organized the material, and transformed it into structured review articles. Their work also includes creating original figures, conceptual diagrams, and visual frameworks to enhance clarity, engagement, and educational value.

Each lecture undergoes rigorous editorial review by a multidisciplinary team, including Drs. Jun-ichi Abe, Michael S. Ewer, Nicolas L. Palaskas, Efstratios Koutroumpakis, Syed Wamique Yusuf, Joerg Herrmann, and Anita Deswal. In addition, the original lecturer reviews the content to ensure accuracy, clinical nuance, relevance, and fidelity to the intended educational message.

As part of the institutional curriculum, the series provides learners with a strong foundation in cardio-oncology, covering key topics such as cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, vascular disease, thromboembolic events, and hypertension. The overarching aim is to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver informed, collaborative, and patient-centered cardiac care in the context of complex oncologic treatment regimens.

We intend to update these lectures annually to maintain alignment with evolving evidence, clinical guidelines, and best practices.
