Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major medical and socio-economic challenge worldwide, impacting millions of individuals each year and frequently resulting in long-term neurological deficits and disability. TBI initiates a complex cascade of primary and secondary injury mechanisms, including direct tissue damage, neuroinflammation, disruption of the blood-brain barrier, excitotoxicity, and oxidative stress. These processes collectively contribute to neuronal death and functional impairments. Despite advancements in acute care, effective and targeted neuroprotection strategies to mitigate injury progression and improve patient outcomes are limited. A deeper understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying TBI—and the development of novel neuroprotective interventions—holds promise for improving recovery and quality of life for patients.
This Research Topic aims to elucidate the key molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Additionally, the project seeks to evaluate both clinical and preclinical outcomes associated with TBI of varying severities, providing a comprehensive understanding of its impacts. A further objective is to explore innovative neuroprotection strategies, including both pharmacological and cellular therapies, with the intent to target and mitigate injury progression during both the acute and chronic stages of TBI.

- Prognostic factors and biomarkers that impact short- and long-term functional outcomes in TBI patients.
