Due to the rapid evolution of this dynamic field, we are pleased to launch a new Research Topic within the Veterinary Regenerative Medicine section of Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
In recent years, veterinary regenerative medicine has progressed at pace—from cell-based therapies and extracellular vesicles to biomaterials, 3D bioprinting, and gene-modulating approaches. Yet, this growth has not been evenly distributed across species, organ systems, or priority clinical needs. Companion animal studies often predominate, while farm, wildlife, and exotic species remain underrepresented. Likewise, musculoskeletal and dermatologic applications are advancing at pace, whereas neurological, cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and ophthalmic indications frequently lack robust preclinical and clinical evidence. As such, thorough review of the field is required to form a basis for translation between species/organ systems, and identify research gaps and questions.
For example, the following questions remain unanswered:
-How do cell source, donor variability, and manufacturing methods influence safety, potency, and reproducibility?
-What best practices should guide study design, standardized outcomes, and long-term follow-up in veterinary trials?
-Where can digital tools—advanced imaging analytics, multi-omics integration, or AI-assisted assessments—provide validated value in translational pathways?
-How should the field navigate regulatory frameworks, ethical considerations, One Health implications, and environmentally sustainable production?
This Research Topic aims to assemble comprehensive reviews across the breadth of veterinary regenerative medicine and across species. Through Review articles, Mini Reviews, and Systematic Reviews, we invite researchers to participate to this article collection.
