Background

Biomaterials have evolved from passive structural scaffolds to active intelligent systems that dynamically interact with the biological environment. Recent breakthroughs include CRISPR biosensing robots for ultra-sensitive pathogen detection, environmentally responsive engineered microbes for targeted drug delivery, and engineered materials for precision immune regulation. These advances provide an unprecedented opportunity to create integrated systems that can detect disease signatures and initiate appropriate therapeutic responses. However, seamless integration of these functions into clinically viable platforms remains a significant challenge and requires interdisciplinary collaboration.

This research project aims to promote the development of intelligent integrated biomaterials platforms that combine high-sensitivity sensing with precision medicine. We seek advanced biomaterials capable of early detection of diseases, real-time monitoring of disease progression, and spatial/temporal control of therapeutic delivery. The ultimate goal is to drive the creation of an integrated diagnosis-treatment system that significantly improves care outcomes.

This Research Topic welcomes contributions focusing on the design and application of smart biomaterials for integrated diagnostics and therapy. Specific themes include:
1) High-sensitivity/high-throughput biosensing platforms incorporating CRISPR, nanozymes, or microfluidic systems;
2) Multifunctional drug delivery systems for targeted and controlled therapeutic release;
3) Immunomodulatory biomaterials for regulating tumor microenvironments, resolving inflammation, and preventing fibrosis;
4) Fully integrated diagnostic-therapeutic devices for point-of-care applications.
We invite Original Research, Review, Mini-Review, and Perspective articles that demonstrate innovative approaches with clear translational potential. Studies incorporating robust in vitro and in vivo validation are particularly encouraged.
