About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

As life expectancy has increased, Heart Failure, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases have become a growing pandemic for older adults. There is no treatment available which can slow the progression of these chronic and neurodegenerative diseases, and huge increases in health care costs are predicted in the coming years. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in these disorders provides the basis for the identification of druggable targets and facilitates the development of novel treatments aimed at preventing a decline in functional activities of daily living and improving the quality of life of older adults.

The primary goal of this Research Topic is to update the readers about the most advanced knowledge in how molecular triggering factors and/or signaling pathways influence almost every aspect of cardiovascular and neurological chronic degenerative diseases. The secondary goal of this topic is to elucidate the specific mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis or progression of cardiovascular and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Heart failure.

This Research Topic welcomes the submission of both original articles and reviews providing to the readers of Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences an update on the following sub-topics:

(1) Molecular mechanisms involved in Heart Failure, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases
(2) Clinical phenotype and in vivo imaging evidence that links molecular mechanisms and Heart Failure, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases

Dr. Gennaro Pagano is a full time employee of F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, Switzerland and Dr. Alessandro Cannavo holds patents related to heart failure. All other Topic Editors declare no competing interests with regards to the Research Topic.
