Background

Regenerative medicine, an emerging branch of medical science, focuses on developing strategies to heal injured tissues and organs and restore function lost due to disease, defects, aging or damage. The progress in the field of stem cells research has revolutionized the concept of organ and tissue regeneration. The capacity of stem cells to self-renew indefinitely and their potential to differentiate into other types of cells represent stem cells as frontiers of tissue regeneration. Advancements in gene editing and tissue engineering technologies including the generation of numerous biological or synthetic scaffolds lay the foundation for cell-based and regenerative therapies.

Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field representing the new concept of tissue regeneration with the support of biomaterials and growth factors. Although the last decade has seen enormous progress in the field of stem cell research and tissue engineering, the real application to patients is still very limited. For the advances of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine some critical problems still need to be addressed and resolved. In this respect a close collaboration between medical doctors and scientist working in the field of stem cell biology and biomaterials could definitely help to reinforce the real applicability of regenerative therapy to patients.

The Research Topic aims to cover the latest outstanding developments in the field of regenerative medicine and promote the integration of Stem cells Research, Technology and Engineering Research.
