Background

Over the years, a growing body of evidence has pointed how endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria share a common interface where they can cooperate to regulate several cellular functions. These close appositions between the mitochondria and ER are termed mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAMs). Interestingly, mitochondria and ER interact with other organelles, such as Golgi apparatus, peroxisomes, lysosomes, plasma membrane and endosomes. However, research involving inter-organelle communication and their significance as precise mechanisms in cancer remain to be elucidated.

Different reports indicate and summarize the relationship between mitochondria and ER. Similarly, MAMs have been described as a central hub in diverse cancer types. Despite it has been widely demonstrated that mitochondria and ER also communicate with other organelles, the importance of other juxtaposition is poor described. A detailed overview of the relevance of the intra-organelle communication is needed to understand whether organelle dynamics and membrane contact sites have a key role in cancer. This Research Topic aims to showcase the current knowledge about the intracellular relationship among several organelles, depict their relevance for cell death and survival and analyze their contribution in cancer. Additionally, we also welcome methodology-related contributions aiming to list all possible methods available to detect the inter-organelle relationship, both in vitro and in vivo.

Following the success of the first volume Organelles Relationships and Interactions: a Cancer Perspective, we welcome Original Research, Review and Methods articles falling under the following aspects with particular attention to cancer:

• Molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in organelle dynamics and contacts
• Recent advances associating cellular functions to organelle dynamics in health and disease
• Organelle dynamics and membrane contact sites during the formation and progression of cancer
• Mutations in cancer that affect dynamics and contacts among organelle
• Therapeutic strategies modulating the proximity between organelle
• Methods to evaluates the interactions between organelle
