Acute leukemias are the most frequent neoplasms in children and adolescents worldwide. In Latin America, increasing incidence rates have been reported for this group of diseases and high mortality at very early stages of treatment. The epidemiology, pathobiology mechanisms, risk factors, prognostic profiles, and therapeutic targets are under intense investigation.

In this Research Topic, we aim to discuss recent advances in the pathobiology, prevention, and treatment of childhood acute leukemias, a health priority in Latin America.

We welcome the submission of Review and Original Research articles from local and international investigators on the following subtopics:

1. Epidemiological studies on the incidence, prevalence, mortality, survival, and risk factors associated with leukemia in children of Latin American origin.

2. The mechanisms involved in the pathobiology of leukemia progression

3. Cutting-edge strategies and novel approaches for treating leukemia

4. Identification of tumor, microenvironment, or immunological profiles of prognostic value in children of Latin American origin

Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics, computational analysis, or predictions of public databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) will not be accepted in any of the sections of Frontiers in Oncology.

Keywords: childhood leukemia, latinos, epidemiology, immune system, therapeutic targets, prognosis

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
