This Research Topic aims to delve into the current landscape of dental education, addressing the evolving needs, challenges, and opportunities in preparing the dentists of tomorrow. It will bring together a collection of scholarly articles that highlight innovative approaches, evidence-based practices, and critical reflections on dental education. By examining various dimensions of dental education, this issue seeks to advance our understanding and provide valuable insights into enhancing the quality and relevance of dental curricula, teaching methodologies, and student learning experiences.

The issue will address three main domains; technology-driven dental education, globalization of dental education and competencies of the future dentists.

The advancement of technology has revolutionized dental education. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and telemedicine have the potential to reshape dental curricula, teaching methodologies, and clinical practice. These innovations enable dental students to engage in realistic simulations, immersive virtual experiences, and remote consultations, enhancing their clinical skills, problem-solving abilities, and decision-making processes. In this Research Topic we aim to explore dental education in a technology advanced world.

As part of our second domain we will address the globalization of dental education. Collaborative research and cross-cultural exchanges are increasing within dental schools and institutions, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices. In this Research Topic we hope that we can highlight international collaboration initiatives and the exposure of dental students to diverse oral health challenges, cultural contexts, and healthcare systems.

The competencies of the dentists of the future will be addressed in this Research Topic. In addition to dental excellence the dentist of the future needs to adapt to a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, promote interprofessional collaboration, be culturally proficient, a leader and a life-long learner. Furthermore, dental education needs to equip future dentists with knowledge and skills to address the emerging oral health challenges including aging populations, changing dietary habits, and environmental factors that pose new complexities to oral healthcare.

Keywords: Dental Education, Oral Health Promotion, Teaching, Technology, Future Dentists, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Telemedicine

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
