Neuropsychiatric disorders are specific, clinically recognized conditions of the brain in which an individual's thoughts, perceptions, emotions and/or behavior is affected therefore impacting the person's everyday functioning significantly. These can be ranging from single symptoms such as anxiety, depressed mood, irritability or fatigue to complex psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder.
The needs of women with neuropsychiatric disorders should be understood & personalized, as:
-One in five women are affected by a common psychiatric disorder such as anxiety.
-About 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women after birth experience depression.
-There are no clear guidelines for the best contraceptive methods and hormone replacement therapies during menopause for women who are also experiencing a neuropsychiatric disorder.
-The guidelines for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders do not specify which medications are better for the treatment of women.
-Women living with neuropsychiatric illness taking antidepressants or antipsychotics can experience different side-effects than men related to their sexual health.
-Hormonal changes and imbalances can have a considerable impact on the prognosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders i.e., lack of estrogen is associated with increased risk of dementia.
-Less women are included in randomized clinical trials investigating medications for neuropsychiatric disorders therefore reducing the gold-standard evidence for this population.
The aim of the present Research Topic is to bring together experts from both fields to create an article collection where psychiatrists and gynecologists address the topic of women with neuropsychiatric disorders to increase understanding and promote personalization of care.
We are looking for review papers, studies, and cases that explore these psychiatry-gynecology related topics and therefore provide space for discussion and an increase in general awareness.
Topic Editor Dr. Agota Barabasy and Topic Coordinators Zsofia Dombi and Helga Kiss are employed by Gedeon Richter Plc.
Topic Editor Dr. Kristina Gemzell-Danielsson is the Principle Investigator of clinical trials which are partially funded by private companies such as Mithraa, Organon, Pfizer, Bayer.
Topic Editor Dr. Maria Judit Molnar receives funding for clinical trials from companies such as Sanofi, Novartis, Stealth Health, Reneo Pharma.
