Background

Autoimmune diseases are characterized by complex interactions among various immune cells, including T and B lymphocytes and professional antigen-presenting cells. Despite the unknown etiology of most autoimmune diseases, recent studies have highlighted the pivotal role of cytokines and chemokines in autoimmunity. These signaling molecules are crucial in orchestrating the recruitment, survival, growth, effector functions, and contraction of autoreactive lymphocytes. Over the past decade, the advent of biological agents targeting cytokine receptors, intracellular signaling pathways, or individual cytokines has significantly improved patient care and alleviated symptoms across a spectrum of chronic inflammatory disorders. However, the challenge remains in conducting genetic research on all individuals with autoimmune diseases, making cytokine testing a viable, time-efficient, and cost-effective alternative. While significant strides have been made in targeting cytokines for treatment, a comprehensive understanding of the cytokine secretome in patients is still lacking. This knowledge could enhance treatment targeting, elucidate the pathogenesis of the autoinflammatory components of autoimmune diseases, and refine diagnostic processes by integrating immunological biomarkers with genetic and epigenetic analyses.

This research topic aims to deepen our understanding of the involvement of various cytokines and chemokines in autoimmune diseases. Additionally, it seeks to explore the potential of developing cytokine-based therapeutic approaches for these disorders. By conducting clinical experiments that target individual cytokines, we aim to uncover the distinct roles these molecules play in the pathogenesis and progression of autoimmune diseases.

To gather further insights into the role of cytokines in autoimmune diseases, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Cytokine-mediated immune regulation in autoimmune diseases
- Cytokine signaling in specific autoimmune diseases
- Cytokine-based diagnostics and therapeutics
- Emerging cytokine families and their implications for autoimmune diseases
- Cytokine-mediated regulation of immune cell function
- Cytokine-induced tissue damage and repair
- Cytokine-based strategies for immune tolerance induction
