Background

This Research Topic is in collaboration with the 11th International Symposium on Neuroprotection and Neurorepair (ISN&N).

Despite an increasing understanding of the pathological mechanisms of neurovascular and neurodegenerative disorders, our arsenal of causal therapeutic interventions is still limited. On the other hand, there have been recent advances in various concepts of cerebroprotection for numerous diseases, and novel diagnostic and therapeutic concepts are tested in translational neurovascular research. The overall aim of this Research Topic is to summarize exciting recent advances and novel concepts in the field. Areas of interest comprise neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, underlying pathological mechanisms, novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches as well as advanced concepts for translational neuroscience. Research content presented at the 2024 International Symposium on Neuroprotection & Neurorepair (ISN&N) will provide the core topics for this Research Topic which, however, is open to contributions from the entire field and not limited to 2024 ISN&N presentations.

The goal of this Research Topic is to create an overview of ongoing research activities in basic, translational neurovascular and cerebroprotection research, putting a spotlight on cutting-edge research in basic, translational neurovascular and cerebroprotection research. The Research Topic is intended to serve as a comprehensive compendium for all colleagues who are interested in this area of research. To achieve this goal, we welcome a wide spectrum of article types focusing on diverse topics.

We will primarily focus on recent research activities, i.e., studies conducted within the last 3 to 5 years. Contributions should provide detailed information on novel diagnostic and therapeutic concepts, thorough pathomechanistical insight, and a strong translational perspective.

We welcome submissions from all areas of translational and clinical neuroscience with a focus on neurovascular and neurodegenerative conditions as well as cerebroprotective approaches. We are particularly interested in submissions covering areas such as:

- In vitro experiments to in vivo research in small and large animal models to early-stage clinical investigations.

- Biomaterials in the context of central nervous system regeneration, disease risk factors, and the impact of frequent comorbidities or sex-specific aspects of central nervous system health and disease.

- Neuroimaging approaches and advances in neuro-immunological research.

The Research Topic will primarily feature original articles and reviews including systematic reviews. However, we will also consider method papers, contributions outlining novel hypotheses, as well as clinical trials and case reports.
