Background

Artificial Intelligence systems have profound implications for human and fundamental rights, necessitating ongoing international and governmental discourse. As AI technologies advance, coordinated efforts between international organizations and state governments are essential to uphold, defend, and address potential human rights violations. Governments must recognize AI's impact and establish urgent policies in response. The international community plays a crucial role in promoting human rights education and addressing new AI-related concerns to prevent violations. Despite emerging research, significant gaps remain in understanding AI's effects on rights protection, making continued exploration critical.

The primary aim of this research topic is to investigate the protection of human rights in the context of artificial intelligence. This involves examining political and legal frameworks necessary for safeguarding rights against AI-related challenges. Specific objectives include identifying potential human rights risks associated with AI, evaluating existing international and national policies, and proposing recommendations to address these issues.

The research focuses on political science perspectives regarding human rights protection through AI. It will explore:

1. Theoretical Frameworks (Human Rights Theories; Political Theories of Justice and Ethics; Sovereignty and Governance);
2. AI and Governance (International Norms and Regulations; National Policies; AI and Democracy; Corporate Accountability);
3. Key Challenges (Privacy and Data Protection; Bias and Discrimination: Freedom of Speech and Expression: Autonomy and Consent);
4. AI in Law Enforcement and Surveillance (Mass Surveillance; Predictive Policing);
5. Future Implications: AI in Warfare and Security; Transnational Justice; AI and Labour Rights
