Inflammation serves as a biological response to harmful stimuli, playing a crucial role in bodily defense but also leading to various chronic conditions when dysregulated. Disorders such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease manifest due to uncontrolled inflammation, earning it the nickname of a silent "killer" affecting global health. Traditional anti-inflammatory treatments offer symptom relief and can slow disease progression, yet their prolonged use often results in adverse effects due to accumulation in non-targeted tissues. This calls for the development of targeted, efficient, and safer therapeutic alternatives.
This Research Topic aims to advance the field of Carrier-Mediated Drug Transport (CMDT) for addressing inflammation and its associated ailments. By focusing on the optimization of drug absorption, delivery, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, the objective is to enhance the precision and safety of anti-inflammatory drugs, thus reducing undesirable side effects and improving patient outcomes. The exploration of CMDT could lead to substantial innovation in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, providing new insights into mechanistic therapies based on robust inflammation models.
To gather further insights into optimal CMDT strategies, we welcome contributions that explore, but are not limited to, the following themes:
• Development of nanoparticle-based or novel biomaterial drug carriers specifically targeted at inflammation • Comprehensive studies on the drug delivery processes: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of anti-inflammatory medications • Detailed analysis of anti-inflammatory mechanisms including the inhibition of inflammatory mediators, immune cell function regulation, gene expression modulation related to inflammation, and management of oxidative stress responses • Application of CMDT in managing diverse inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and more severe forms like exudative or specific inflammations • Theoretical and empirical research that contributes to a better understanding and treatment of inflammation through advanced drug delivery systems
Original Research, Review, and Mini Review articles are invited for submission to contribute to this comprehensive examination of CMDT advancements in inflammation treatment.
