Here we present the Frontiers in Pharmacoepidemiology ‘Emerging Trends in Real-World Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety’ article collection. This series is dedicated to showcasing innovative research that highlights the evolving field of pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety, providing a global platform to feature transformative work in this domain.
Real-world evidence is increasingly crucial in understanding the quality and safe use of medicines across diverse clinical and demographic contexts. This collection seeks to capture the scope and breadth of ongoing research, focusing on real-world studies that address critical challenges in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety. We invite submissions in various formats, including original research, systematic reviews, mini-reviews, case reports, hypotheses and theories, and perspectives. Submissions should reflect experimental, computational, database-driven, or mixed-method research addressing these key themes:
1. The impact of Drug-Related Problems (DRPs) on health and outcomes, emphasizing issues like potentially inappropriate medication use (PIM), anticholinergic burden, polypharmacy, and high-risk medications. These studies are particularly relevant across diverse settings, including primary care, hospitals, communities, nursing homes, aged care facilities, and home care. The focus extends to the application of advanced methodologies such as clinical epidemiology, pharmacovigilance, real-world data analytics, drug utilization studies, propensity score matching, marginal structural modeling, and longitudinal observational studies. Innovative intervention approaches, including deprescribing initiatives and risk-benefit assessments, are also highly valued.
2. The clinical effectiveness and safety of cancer immunotherapy represent another critical area of focus.
3. Research on parental medication exposure and offspring health outcomes is encouraged.
4. Advances in pain management are also of interest, specifically research addressing the safety and effectiveness of various strategies. Emphasis is placed on minimizing opioid-related risks and exploring alternative approaches to improve patient care.
We are confident that this initiative will foster meaningful discussions, inspire future research and catalyze advancements in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety, paving the way for safer and more effective use of medicines worldwide.
