Background

This is the third volume of the Research Topic series Increasing Importance of Patients-generated Real World Data for Healthcare Policy Decisions about Medicinal Products, building on the success of the first and second volume which you can view here.

Real-World Data (RWD) is increasingly recognized as a crucial element in clinical research, offering insights that complement those derived from traditional clinical trials. A patient-centric approach, which prioritizes the involvement of patients and patient-derived data, is being enthusiastically adopted in contemporary studies. However, challenges in terms of study design, data integration, and stakeholder collaboration remain. Additionally, there is a need to further explore and validate the impact of these methods on the quality of life and clinical outcomes from the patients' perspectives.

This Research Topic aims to compile a diverse array of research that utilizes patient-centric methodologies to harness the power of RWD in clinical studies. We seek to understand the associated challenges, the effectiveness of various approaches in actual practice, and the overall impact on healthcare policy and patient care. Contributions are expected to provide comprehensive insights and evidence that could shape future research orientations and healthcare strategies.

To gather further insights into patient-centered research methodologies, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Design strategies for patient-centric studies using RWD and patient-generated data.

- Analysis of patient subtypes and their specific needs in clinical research.

- Innovative methods for outcome measurement that reflect true patient experiences and preferences.

- Integration of patient data with disease-specific registries to deepen understanding of the patient journey.

- Collaborative efforts across stakeholders that enhance the utility of RWD in clinical research and healthcare policy.

This Research Topic encourages the submission of original research articles, review articles, case studies, and methodological papers that shed light on these aspects.
