Background

In the field of special education, the involvement of parents is crucial as they play an integral role as the primary educators and support system for children with educational difficulties. Their engagement is linked to improved academic outcomes, better social development, enhanced psychological well-being, and heightened self-confidence in their children. Concurrently, the advent of new digital technologies—including serious games, virtual reality, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and more—has opened up innovative avenues for enhancing parental involvement. These technologies facilitate communication, collaboration, and personalized learning, transforming parents into active co-educators in their children's educational journeys.

This Research Topic aims to explore the intricate dynamics of parental involvement in the creation and administration of specialized educational programs for individuals with disabilities, such as learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, sensory impairments, giftedness, and more. It will investigate how digital technologies can be strategically utilized to support parents in these roles, enhancing the educational experiences and outcomes for students with special needs.

To enhance our understanding and application of these dynamics, we invite submissions that explore a wide range of related themes. We are particularly interested in articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following topics:

- The role of parents in educational programs for students with disabilities.
- Customization of educational programs using Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
- Parental involvement in the design of serious games for the socio-emotional development of disabled students.
- Applications of virtual reality in skills development for students with disabilities and the involvement of parents.
- Parental roles in therapeutic or diagnostic activities for children with disabilities.
- Impact of virtual reality, robotics, AI and chatbots, drones, extended reality, brain-computer interfaces, and gaming technologies in the education of students with learning challenges and the enhancement of parental participation.

We encourage potential authors to submit research studies, empirical data, and literature reviews that focus on these crucial aspects of special education.
