Background

As the global population ages, the number of people living with dementia is rising rapidly, presenting significant challenges for individuals, families, and healthcare systems worldwide. Research is instrumental in addressing these emerging challenges and improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia. We invite submissions for a special topic collection in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience that aims to broaden the scope of dementia research by focusing on interdisciplinary perspectives, bringing together neuroscience, social sciences, and applied dementia research. This collection seeks to highlight understudied and relatively untapped areas of dementia research, within topics such as sexuality and intimacy, death and dying, authority, autonomy and capacity, human rights and freedoms, institutional and state abuse, as well as intersectional inequalities.

We welcome empirical studies employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches, as well as theoretical pieces and perspectives on research and care. We particularly encourage contributions from colleagues across different areas of the world to capture a range of perspectives.

Our goal is to foster a comprehensive understanding of dementia that encompasses the lived experiences of individuals and their caregivers, and to promote innovative approaches to care and support.
