Background

Health promotion is a lifelong process that plays a crucial role in improving well-being, preventing diseases, and reducing healthcare burdens across different life stages. From infancy to old age, health promotion strategies must be tailored to meet the evolving physiological, psychological, and social needs of individuals. This special issue in Frontiers in Epidemiology explores the importance of health promotion across the lifespan, highlighting evidence-based interventions that enhance quality of life and longevity. Health promotion begins in utero and continues throughout the lifespan, with different goals depending on the age, current health status, socioeconomic context, and other determinants of health. A holistic, life-course approach to health promotion acknowledges the interconnections between different life stages. Early interventions have long-term benefits, and cumulative healthy behaviors contribute to extended health spans. Addressing health inequities and integrating policies that support individuals across all ages ensures a healthier society.

This special issue aims to explore innovative strategies, policies, and interdisciplinary research that drive effective health promotion from birth to old age. By examining key interventions at each life stage, we seek to advance knowledge on sustainable approaches to improving public health outcomes globally.

We are interested in studies that focus on identifying risk factors and quantifying their impact, preventive interventions using health education, training, and specific therapeutics, including psychosocial mediation and screenings. We seek research that presents results from interventions throughout the individual's life course or examines intergenerational transitions. We will pay special attention to reports of results and gains for patients from a perspective of value-based healthcare and ethical soundness. Methods should be rigorous, reproducible, and adjusted to the specific research question, whether quantitative or qualitative.
