Background

Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics have emerged as key areas in personalized medicine, paving the way for tailored treatments based on individual genetic profiles. These fields focus on how genetic variation affects drug metabolism, efficacy, and safety, potentially revolutionizing the treatment paradigms for complex diseases such as psychiatric disorders, cancers, cardiovascular conditions, chronic inflammatory diseases, degenerative diseases, and neurological disorders. Despite significant advancements, challenges remain in fully understanding and applying pharmacogenetic insights in clinical practice. Questions about their implementation, clinical utility, and equitable integration into healthcare systems persist. Addressing these gaps requires comprehensive reviews and critical evaluations of current evidence.

This Research Topic aims to explore the integration of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics in personalized medicine, specifically targeting their role in treating a variety of complex diseases and the current status of implementation practices. By investigating the genetic underpinnings of drug response, we aim to answer pressing questions regarding the customization of therapies based on individual genetic make-ups. Key objectives of this review are to synthesize current evidence on genetic markers associated with treatment outcomes, critically evaluate existing gene-based therapeutic approaches, and explore how genetic variability influences disease progression and therapeutic response across populations. The review also aims to identify knowledge gaps and propose future research directions to advance personalized medicine.

To gather further insights into the complexities of pharmacogenetics in personalized medicine, we welcome review articles addressing but not limited to, the following themes:

- Genetic markers and their role in treatment customization for psychiatric disorders
- Advances in pharmacogenetic approaches for cancer therapies
- Genetic predictors of drug efficacy and safety in cardiovascular diseases
- Pharmacogenomic strategies for managing chronic inflammatory diseases
- The impact of genetic variability on treatments for degenerative and neurological disorders
- Pharmacogenomics in underrepresented populations
- Global models and challenges in pharmacogenomics implementation

The Reviews in Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics: 2025 collection welcomes full-length, mini, or systematic review papers. New articles will be added to this collection as they are published.
