Background

The field of cellular and infection microbiology has increasingly recognized the gut microbiota as an essential component in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and overall host health. This complex microecosystem functions in nutrient absorption, metabolism, immune system maturation, and the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. Its influence extends beyond the gastrointestinal tract, affecting various organs, including the brain and liver. Recent studies have highlighted a significant association between gut microbial dysbiosis and the onset of numerous gastrointestinal diseases in animals. Disruption in the microbial composition can compromise intestinal permeability, thus facilitating the translocation of pathogens and harmful substances, leading to inflammation, diarrhea, or even diseases like inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Despite these developments, there remains a critical need to deepen our understanding of the gut microbiome's composition and structure to devise effective treatments and preventive measures for animal gastrointestinal diseases.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate the complex interactions between the gut microbiome and animal gastrointestinal diseases through a multidisciplinary lens, employing advanced multi-omics techniques. By exploring these relationships, the goal is to enhance our understanding of disease pathogenesis and identify new strategies to alleviate and prevent gastrointestinal conditions from a microbial perspective.

The scope of this Research Topic includes, but is not limited to:
-Investigating changes in the gut microbiome associated with diseases such as colitis, intestinal cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, and various forms of diarrhea caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses.
-Employing multi-omics approaches to uncover the role and mechanisms of gut microbial dysbiosis in gastrointestinal diseases.
-Developing innovative therapeutic interventions, including probiotics, prebiotics, polysaccharides, and natural products, to modulate gut microbiota and improve intestinal health.
-Elucidating the mechanisms through which gut microbiota influence intestinal function and disease progression in animals via metabolite, enzyme, and peptide production.
