Background

Biofilms are surface-associated microbial communities embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix. This mode of growth confers increased tolerance to antimicrobials and immune responses, contributing to the persistence of infections, particularly on medical devices. Their resilience complicates treatment and underscores the need for targeted antibiofilm strategies. Their presence is closely linked to chronic infections, increased resistance to antimicrobial agents, and a significant clinical burden. Biofilms are frequently associated with chronic and device-related infections, where standard antimicrobial therapies often fail. Their presence significantly increases treatment complexity, healthcare costs, and patient morbidity. Therefore, understanding and overcoming biofilm-associated infections have become a priority in infectious disease research, with significant implications for public health and patient care.

This article collection focuses on innovative antibiofilm strategies and their transformative potential for managing infectious diseases. Focusing on the prevention, inhibition, and disruption of microbial biofilms, the collection highlights novel research into compounds, therapeutic approaches, diagnostics, and mechanisms of biofilm physiology. It invites contributions on the molecular characterization of biofilm formation, advances in detection technologies, and evaluations of existing and emerging antibiofilm strategies.
