Background

Environmental innovation and sustainable development are critical challenges facing our world today. While patent data offers a wealth of information on technological advancements in these areas, many questions remain unanswered. How do we effectively measure the impact of green innovations? What drives corporate environmental innovation? How do regional dynamics influence sustainable technology development? Current research struggles to fully leverage the potential of patent data to address these issues. Moreover, the interaction between environmental policies, technological progress, and economic growth remains poorly understood. Patent analytics can provide unique insights into these challenges by uncovering patterns in innovation trends, identifying key players, and mapping technological landscapes. However, methodological gaps persist in effectively analyzing and interpreting this vast amount of data, particularly in the context of sustainability. This Research Topic aims to address these knowledge gaps and advance our understanding of environmental innovation through patent analytics.

The goal of this Research Topic is to harness the power of patent analytics to deepen our understanding of environmental innovation and sustainable development. We aim to showcase cutting-edge research that utilizes analytical methods to extract insights from patent data in the context of sustainability. The Topic seeks to bridge the gap between patent information and actionable knowledge for policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals. We encourage submissions that develop novel methodologies, apply existing techniques in innovative ways, or provide empirical evidence to inform decision-making in sustainable technology development. The Research Topic aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, bringing together perspectives from technology management, data science, environmental studies, and policy research. Ultimately, we seek to contribute to the advancement of sustainable technologies by improving our ability to analyze, interpret, and leverage patent data for environmental innovation.

We invite contributions covering original research, systematic literature reviews, bibliometric reviews, and short communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

• novel methods for analyzing green patent trends and their impact
• patent-based indicators for measuring sustainability in innovation
• analysis of knowledge spillovers in environmental technologies
• patent strategies for sustainable technology development
• mapping technological trajectories in clean energy and resource management
• patent analytics for assessing policy effectiveness in promoting green innovation
• comparative studies of regional patent landscapes in sustainable technologies
• patent-based forecasting of emerging environmental technologies
• analysis of collaboration networks in sustainable innovation
• integration of patent data with other data sources for sustainability assessment.

All submissions should align with the scope of the Patent Analytics section in Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics, providing in-depth analysis and implications for researchers, managers, and policymakers.
