About this Research Topic

Background

Cancer remains one of the most formidable health challenges of our time, characterized by its biological complexity, relentless progression, and ability to evade even the most advanced treatments. The complexity of cancer is underscored by the variety of molecular pathways involved in its development, progression, and evasion of treatments, which facilitate cellular changes such as rapid growth and the ability to invade. Over the past decade, incredible advancements in our knowledge of these pathways have opened exciting new therapeutic possibilities. However, significant hurdles remain, particularly in translating these groundbreaking discoveries into effective treatments for patients.

This Research Topic seeks to unite cutting-edge studies that will deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving cancer's progression and showcase emerging therapeutic approaches. We invite contributions from fundamental insights into signaling pathways to preclinical studies.

This collection will focus on endocrine cancers, including thyroid, adrenal, and neuroendocrine tumors, as well as hormone-sensitive tumors, such as breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. These malignancies present unique biological challenges, as dysregulated hormonal signaling frequently intersects with key oncogenic pathways. Understanding and leveraging these distinct molecular vulnerabilities is crucial for the development of more effective, targeted therapies.

We aim to bring together high-quality research and review articles that shed light on the molecular pathways driving cancer progression, treatment resistance, and therapeutic response. By featuring preclinical discoveries, novel drug targets, patient-derived organoid models, and emerging treatment strategies, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of how molecular research is shaping the future of precision oncology. We especially welcome studies that help bridge the gap between bench and bedside, moving us closer to more personalized and effective cancer treatments.

Authors are invited to submit original research articles, reviews, mini reviews, perspectives, opinions, and methods on endocrine and hormone-sensitive tumors that address the following themes:

• Dysregulated molecular pathways in cancer progression

• Mechanisms of treatment resistance and potential strategies to overcome them

• Targeted therapies and their molecular rationale

• Advances in patient-derived organoid models to study tumor biology and drug response

• Interplay between endocrine signaling and oncogenic pathways

• Biomarkers for cancer progression, prognosis, and treatment response

• Novel drug discovery and preclinical testing strategies

Keywords: cancer progression, molecular mechanism, targeted therapy, treatment resistance, preclinical model, biomarker, drug development, patient-derived organoid, endocrine cancer, hormone-sensitive cancer

Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
