Neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression, Alzheimer's disease, autism spectrum disorders, exert a substantial and detrimental impact on global public mental health. The biological and clinical heterogeneity of these disorders poses major challenges on precise diagnosis and effective treatment.
This heterogeneity manifests in the following aspects: (1) Multi-dimensional clinical phenotype differences, such as symptom combinations and disease trajectories; (2) Variations in biological mechanisms, including polygenic risk profiles, neural circuit dysfunctions and neurotransmitter imbalances; and (3) individualized treatment responses, such as drug response rates and neuromodulation parameters.
Emerging methodologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), optogenetics and multi-omics technologies are now enabling multi-dimensional research on these complex conditions.
To promote breakthroughs, this research topic is focusing on integrative research spanning basic mechanisms, translational medicine, and innovative technologies, aiming to unravel disease heterogeneity and advance targeted therapeutic strategies. We sincerely invite scholars globally to contribute original research and reviews to this research topic. The objectives of the papers include, but are not limited to:
1. Decoding neurobiological basis of neuropsychiatric disorders, which encompasses genetic and epigenetic, neural circuits, the gut-brain axis, neuroimmunity, and changes in neurotransmitters, to unreal disease heterogeneity.
2. Precision biomarkers and AI-driven diagnostic models for early, subtype-specific identification of neuropsychiatric disorders.
3. Translating mechanistic insights into personalized treatments via emerging therapeutics such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, microbiota transplantation, and exosome therapy.
Through these cutting-edge articles, this research topic endeavors to deepen the understanding of neuropsychiatric diseases heterogeneity, paving the way for more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
