Background

Due to the remarkable success of the Research Topic 'Emerging/Re-emerging Poultry Viruses' and the rapidly evolving subject area, we are pleased to launch Volume II for this topic.

Emerging and re-emerging viral infectious diseases have been a continual concern for the poultry industry. In recent years, a number of emergent viruses have been identified in the global poultry population. These viruses can be mainly categorized into two groups: 1) emerging novel poultry viruses, such as Astroviruses Causing Fatal Gout in Goslings, chicken circovirus, and diverse Avian Gyrovirus, which are found for the first time in poultry, and 2) re-emerging poultry viruses, such as Infectious Laryngotracheitis Virus, Infectious Bronchitis Virus, Fowl Adenovirus, and Avian Hepatitis E. Both have caused great economical loss worldwide, so prevention and control of the spread of these viruses must be core strategies used to combat the relevant diseases.

This Research Topic aims to report recent progress and challenges in this area, and inspire new strategies. We welcome submissions of high-quality articles including Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews and Case Reports focusing on, but not limited to:

- Novel detection methods for emerging/re-emerging poultry viruses

- Epidemiology and economic impact of emerging or re-emerging poultry viruses

- Identification of novel emerging viruses, and their epidemic and transmission characteristics

- Identification of novel species or genotypes of re-emerging viruses, and their epidemic and transmission characteristics

- Genetic evolution and novel vaccine against the emerging/re-emerging poultry viruses

- Viral pathogenesis and host responses, either alone or combined
