Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery combines the minimal invasiveness of laparoscopy with precise dexterous instrumentation. In addition, the robotic platform filters tremors and provides three-dimensional, magnified vision - superior to both laparoscopic and open fields of view. These factors allow complex operations in the discipline of hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery to occur within a minimally morbid perioperative course without compromising efficacy.
As robotic-assisted surgery gains traction, questions about clinical safety, oncological outcomes, and patient recovery in comparison to conventional open or laparoscopic operations, have emerged. Recent studies have begun to answer these questions, demonstrating acceptable oncologic outcomes with less complications such as bleeding and conversion to open technique, when compared to laparoscopy.
More data is needed to clarify these preliminary findings. In particular, the details of the cost of robotics, the long term outcomes of early cancer patients and pooling for multicenter prospective studies to improve data quality are needed.
This Research Topic aims to address the evolving landscape of robotic surgery in HBP procedures by examining technical innovations, clinical outcomes, and future perspectives. It seeks to evaluate the end-to-end impact of robotic technology on surgical precision and patient outcomes, alongside traditional approaches. The overarching goal is to provide clarity on how robotic surgery aligns or diverges from conventional care paths and its overall contribution to HBP surgical efficacy.
To gather further insights, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Technical developments and robotic platforms in HBP surgery; • Comparative studies and meta-analyses between robotic and laparoscopic/open procedures; • Training, learning curves, and standardization of robotic techniques; • Short-term and long-term patient outcomes and quality of life improvements; • Case series and novel approaches in complex HBP procedures; • Economic, ethical, and future considerations in robotic HBP surgery.
We welcome, but are not limited to, original research, reviews, and evidence-based perspectives to improve our understanding of how robotic surgery is continuing to shape hepato-biliary and pancreatic care.
