Background

The study of bone health and disease has traditionally relied on standard imaging approaches such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to evaluate bone mineral density and fracture risk. However, advances in imaging technology now allow for a more detailed and precise characterization of bone microarchitecture, quality, and strength. These developments are transforming how clinicians and researchers assess skeletal health, particularly in the context of endocrine and metabolic disorders, and are improving strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of bone-related diseases.

This Research Topic aims to highlight the growing role of imaging-based methods in endocrine bone research and clinical practice. By bringing together studies from a range of imaging modalities, this collection will provide a comprehensive overview of both established and emerging techniques. The focus is on methods that deliver new insights into bone structure and function beyond traditional density measurements, thereby supporting improved clinical outcomes and advancing scientific understanding of hormone-mediated skeletal regulation.

• CT and micro-CT in translational bone and endocrine research

• Imaging biomarkers for bone turnover, metabolic activity, and therapeutic monitoring in endocrine disease

• Artificial intelligence and machine learning in predicting fracture and disease outcomes in endocrine-mediated bone disorders

This collection will serve as a platform for clinicians, endocrinologists, radiologists, and researchers to showcase innovative approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives, ultimately fostering the development of imaging strategies that advance both research and clinical practice in endocrine bone health.
