Background

The field of oncology has been profoundly impacted by malignant solid tumours, representing a significant challenge in healthcare. While strides have been made in the early diagnosis of certain tumours, many cases remain undetected until they reach an advanced, inoperable stage. With the advent of precision medicine, there is a critical need for drugs targeting specific molecules or molecular pathways. Despite these advancements, a subset of patients exhibits resistance to existing treatments. Consequently, the discovery of new prognostic and predictive markers is vital to address these gaps in global cancer research.

This Research Topic aims to foster innovation by encompassing a broad spectrum of studies, from fundamental research to cutting-edge translational medicine. It seeks to investigate diagnostic biomarkers associated with major malignant neoplasms and explore markers implicated in carcinogenesis. The focus extends to the in situ expression of prognostic and predictive biomarkers and those involved in the interaction between tumour cells and the inflammatory infiltrate. Furthermore, it encompasses microenvironmental biomarkers that contribute to tumour progression and therapy resistance, environmental factors influencing carcinogenesis, and the integration of AI technologies for multi-omics biomarker discovery.

To gather further insights in the intricate landscape of solid tumour biomarkers, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Diagnostic biomarkers in major malignant neoplasms.
- Markers linked to carcinogenesis phenomena.
- In situ expression of prognostic and predictive biomarkers.
- Markers influencing the interaction between neoplastic cells and inflammatory infiltrate.
- Microenvironmental biomarkers contributing to tumour progression and therapy resistance.

We are particularly interested in studies relating to urinary tumours, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and gynecological cancers. We encourage submissions in a variety of article types, including original research papers, reviews, methodologies, and case studies.
