Background

Type 1 diabetes has traditionally been characterized by autoimmune β-cell destruction and insulin dependence, yet a growing body of evidence reveals substantial metabolic heterogeneity among affected individuals. The coexistence of metabolic syndrome features, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity poses additional clinical challenges, complicating both glycemic control and long-term outcomes. Moreover, rapid weight loss interventions and modern diabetes technologies are reshaping disease management, raising important questions about metabolic adaptation, durability of remission, and cardiovascular risk.

This Research Topic aims to explore the evolving clinical and metabolic landscape of Type 1 diabetes, focusing on patients who present with overlapping features of metabolic syndrome or undergo intensive therapeutic interventions. Contributions are encouraged that address how advanced technologies, body-composition changes, and metabolic remodeling influence disease progression and complications. Studies integrating clinical, biochemical, and mechanistic insights are particularly welcome to advance individualized approaches in Type 1 diabetes care.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Interaction between Type 1 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- Long-term metabolic consequences of rapid or intensive weight loss in Type 1 diabetes.
- Clinical evaluation of advanced technologies in demanding or complex Type 1 diabetes cases.
- Markers of metabolic resilience and predictors of treatment response.
- Cardiometabolic and renal outcomes in metabolically complex Type 1 diabetes.
- Clinical frameworks for integrating metabolic assessment into routine Type 1 diabetes care.
