Background

Fibroblasts play a pivotal role in the progression of tissue fibrosis, a condition characterized by excessive connective tissue deposition leading to organ dysfunction in diseases such as liver cirrhosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and systemic sclerosis. Despite advances in understanding the role of fibroblasts, challenges remain in effectively targeting these cells for therapeutic interventions. Current research highlights the complexity of fibroblast phenotypes and signaling pathways, presenting both opportunities and challenges for fibrosis management. Recent studies have made strides in identifying key pathways involved in fibroblast activation and proliferation, such as the TGF-β signaling pathway, and have begun to explore potential therapeutic targets. However, the translation of these findings into effective treatments is hindered by the heterogeneity of fibroblast activation and the lack of specific markers for targeting these cells.

This Research Topic aims to explore the challenges and develop innovative therapeutic strategies for addressing fibroblasts in tissue fibrosis. By examining the mechanisms underlying fibroblast activation and identifying potential therapeutic targets, this research seeks to define strategies that can mitigate fibrosis progression and improve patient outcomes. Questions central to this Research Topic include how various fibroblast subtypes contribute to fibrosis, the molecular pathways involved, and the development of novel interventions to selectively target fibroblasts.

To gather further insights into therapeutic approaches and challenges faced in fibrosis research, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Molecular and cellular mechanisms of fibroblast activation in fibrosis.
- Novel therapeutic targets and strategies for fibroblast modulation.
- Advances in drug development specific to fibroblast inhibition.
- Role of fibroblasts in different types of fibrotic diseases.
- Biomarkers for identifying and targeting fibroblast subtypes.

Articles types that we welcome include original research, reviews, methodology papers, and case studies.
