A Metacoupled Approach to Analyzing Multiple Shocks Affecting Multiple Systems

[Global shocks such as war, natural disasters, disease, or economic collapse have widespread and transformative consequences. In this manuscript, we apply the integrated framework of metacoupling (human-nature interactions within and across nearby and distant systems) to conceptualize the effects of multiple shocks on multiple coupled human and natural systems. Shocks have substantial social, environmental, and economic impacts on various system components. Using Ukraine's agri-food industry as a demonstration, we analyze how two shocks (Russia-Ukraine war and COVID-19) perpetuate these effects across space and time on Ukraine's interconnected coupled human and natural systems. We specifically focus on impacts on agri-food sector resilience, health and well-being, and socioeconomic livelihood.]
