Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment for Brain-Heart Comorbid Disease

In recent years, excellent advances have been made in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and care of Brain-Heart Comorbid Disease. Apart from the fact that brain and heart diseases share common risk factors, it has been shown that a variety of brain injuries, e.g., ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), cerebral hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury (TBI), brain tumor, and intracranial hypertension (IH) can trigger cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, and even heart failure. The brain-cardiac syndrome, which includes both cardiac dysfunction induced by neurological disease and the effects of cardiac injury on the brain, is common in patients with cerebrovascular symptoms. However, how these interactions in the brain-cardiac axis lead to a pathological course is not fully understood. Therefore, a deeper understanding of brain-cardiac interactions would provide new insights for future therapies and tailored treatments, which would greatly benefit patients with neurological dysfunction.

In this Research Topic, we will discuss brain-cardiac interactions and the physiology and pathogenesis of comorbid diseases between the brain and the heart. We will also highlight treatment, rehabilitation and prevention initiatives for such comorbid diseases related to stroke and other neurological abnormalities such as ischemic stroke, cerebral hemorrhage and SAH etc.
