About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 25 March 2026

Background

Retinal neuroprotection is a critical area of research focused on preventing or slowing the degeneration of retinal neurons, which are essential for vision. Various retinal diseases, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy, can lead to significant vision loss or blindness due to the death of these neurons. Understanding the mechanisms underlying retinal neurodegeneration and finding effective neuroprotective strategies remains an urgent priority in ophthalmology. Recently, the concept of repurposing existing drugs that are already approved for other conditions has gained traction, offering a potentially expedited path to discovering effective treatments for retinal diseases.

The primary objective of this Research Topic is to study retinal neuroprotective strategies. Current treatments for retinal diseases often focus on symptom management rather than halting or reversing neurodegeneration. By investigating both novel therapeutics and repurposed drugs, we aim to uncover new insights and approaches that can protect retinal neurons. The repurposing strategy is particularly promising as it leverages existing safety and efficacy data, potentially accelerating the timeline for clinical application. This approach can provide new uses for well-known pharmaceuticals, thereby reducing the time and cost associated with drug development.

We welcome contributors to submit original research articles, reviews, and clinical studies that address the following themes:

◦ Mechanisms of retinal neurodegeneration in various diseases, including glaucoma, AMD, and diabetic retinopathy.
◦ Identification and validation of novel neuroprotective agents.
◦ Repurposing of existing drugs for retinal neuroprotection
◦ Preclinical and clinical trials focused on neuroprotective strategies for the retina.
◦ Biomarkers for early detection of retinal neurodegeneration and monitoring the efficacy of neuroprotective treatments.
◦ Advances in drug delivery systems targeting the retina.
